Best Time to Visit Sasan Gir: A Month-by-Month Weather & Packing Guide

May 20, 2026  ·  By Wildlife Gir Resort Team  ·  8 min read

Timing your visit to Sasan Gir well can make the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one. The park's climate swings between cool winters, scorching summers, and a mandatory monsoon closure — each season offering a very different safari experience.

Winter (November – February): The Popular Choice

This is peak season, and for good reason. Daytime temperatures hover comfortably between 12°C and 28°C, mornings are crisp, and wildlife sightings are frequent as animals move toward water sources. Expect larger crowds and higher room rates — book your safari permits and stay well in advance.

Summer (March – Mid-June): Best for Serious Sightings

Temperatures can climb past 40°C, but this heat pushes animals toward the park's watering holes, making lion and leopard sightings noticeably more frequent, especially on morning safaris. Pack light cotton clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and carry more water than you think you'll need.

Monsoon (16 June – 15 October): The Park Is Closed

Gir National Park closes entirely during the monsoon to allow the forest to regenerate and to protect animals during their breeding season. If you're set on visiting during these months, plan around the resort's other offerings — nature walks, cultural evenings, and the lush, rain-fed landscape — rather than a safari.

What to Pack, Whatever the Season

  • Neutral-coloured clothing: Avoid bright colours or white, which can startle wildlife and stand out in the bush.
  • Layers for early mornings: Even in summer, pre-dawn safari departures can feel surprisingly cool.
  • Binoculars and a zoom lens: Sightings are often at a distance — good optics make all the difference.
  • Reusable water bottle: Many resorts, including ours, encourage a plastic-free safari experience.
There's no single "best" month for everyone — winter suits comfort-seekers, summer rewards patient wildlife photographers, and the monsoon rewards those happy to skip the safari for the forest's quieter side.

Quick Reference

If comfort matters most to you, aim for December or January. If sightings are your priority, consider late April or May despite the heat. And always check the forest department's official reopening date each year, since it can shift slightly around the mid-October reopening.
