Gir National Park, established in 1965, is located in the Junagadh district of Gujarat. It was created specifically to protect the endangered Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) — a subspecies that once roamed across Asia and the Middle East but now survives only in Gir.
As per the 2020 lion census, the Gir ecosystem is home to 674 Asiatic Lions — a remarkable conservation success story. The population has grown from just 177 lions in 1968 to over 674 today.
