A Taste of Kathiyawad: Traditional Gujarati Cuisine Near Gir

June 5, 2026  ·  By Wildlife Gir Resort Team  ·  7 min read

A trip to Sasan Gir isn't complete without tasting the food of the Saurashtra region. Kathiyawadi cuisine — hearty, rustic, and generously spiced — reflects the land it comes from: dry, sun-baked plains that call for warming, robust flavours rather than delicate ones.

What Makes Kathiyawadi Food Different

Unlike the sweeter Gujarati cuisine found in cities like Ahmedabad or Surat, Kathiyawadi food leans savoury and spicy. Garlic, red chilli, and a generous hand with ghee define the region's cooking style. Meals are typically vegetarian, built around millets, buttermilk, and seasonal vegetables that thrive in the dry Saurashtra climate.

Dishes to Look Out For

  • Bajra Rotla: A thick, hand-patted flatbread made from pearl millet, traditionally served with a generous dollop of white butter.
  • Lasaniya Bataka: Baby potatoes cooked in a fiery garlic-chilli masala — a Kathiyawadi classic found on nearly every local thali.
  • Sev Tameta nu Shaak: A tangy tomato curry topped with crunchy gram-flour sev, best mopped up with a hot rotla.
  • Chaas (Buttermilk): Spiced, chilled buttermilk served with almost every meal — as much a coolant against the heat as a beverage.
  • Lasan Chutney: A fiery dry garlic-chilli chutney, added in small amounts to nearly every dish for a sharp kick.

The Ritual of the Kathiyawadi Thali

Meals here are rarely eaten in a hurry. A traditional thali is served in courses — rotla and shaak first, followed by khichdi and kadhi, ending with a sweet like lapsi. Many resorts and local eateries around Sasan Gir recreate this experience with live rotla-making stations, letting guests watch the bread being patted and roasted over an open flame.

Food here is an extension of hospitality — a Kathiyawadi host will always insist on one more rotla before letting you leave the table.

Where to Experience It

While small local dhabas around Sasan Gir serve authentic thalis at modest prices, many resorts now curate a Kathiyawadi dinner night featuring folk music and live cooking demonstrations — a good option for travellers who want the cultural experience without venturing far from their stay.
